About The Barrow Mansion Wedding Venue

Barrow Mansion, built in 1837, has a rich history in Jersey City, with a story that goes all the way back to the 1800s. YMCA purchased the Barrow Mansion in 1900 and converted it to help serve single working men migrating to the city. The St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church eventually bought it and, in 1982, formed the Barrow Mansion Development Corporation, a nonprofit that runs the building as a community facility.

Today, the Barrow Mansion is more than just an event venue; it’s a community center dedicated to serving those needing help. It is a beacon for the Recovery community, hosting over 1,300 neighborhood and self-help meetings annually. After Hurricane Sandy, it became the headquarters for a city-wide relief effort that raised and distributed over $1.35 million in goods and services to those in need. One of the best parts about hosting a wedding at the Barrow Mansion? Your rental fees also contribute to keeping the Barrow Mansion’s efforts alive to continuously serve our community and those needing assistance.

Details of the Grounds

The Barrow Mansion is an 1837 Greek Revival-style building known for its symmetry and ornate architectural details. The Mansion comprises three separate rooms that can be rented separately or in any combination to suit your needs and accommodate your guest list. There is also a giant kitchen with a ten-burner Garland stove that is perfect for a caterer to use.

There are two parlors, the Front Parlor and the Rear Parlor, that are available to use for your wedding. They have ornate crown molding original to the mansion, ornate fireplaces, and other architectural details. Use one parlor for your ceremony, flooded with natural light and painted with neutral colors to accommodate whatever color palette you desire.

Then, put the other parlor to good use for a cocktail hour before moving into the Theatre for dinner and dancing! The Theatre is a large space added on by the YMCA at the turn of the century that is the perfect size for hosting a celebration of up to 150 guests. Transform it with colorful uplighting and other personalized touches for a unique and elegant affair.

One of the most unique perks of The Barrow Mansion? They are also home to the oldest bowling alley in the country!

Photography Opportunities

Barrow Mansion has so many beautiful opportunities for beautiful wedding photos. We’ll take elegant pictures on the front steps in front of the stately columns and wander the grounds for other beautiful and natural backdrops. A pair of enormous wooden doors lead inside that are perfect for pictures with a warm, rustic flair.

Indoors, we’ll take advantage of the architectural details like the ornately carved fireplaces, tall windows, and an elegant staircase perfect for vintage bridal portraits. Speaking of vintage, we’ll wander down to the antique bowling alley for fun, charismatic, playful, personable pictures, just like you!

When it comes to hosting your wedding at Barrow Mansion, you are welcome to bring in your own certified vendors. They don’t provide coordination, and you can rent chairs, tables, etc. from them at a reasonable cost. Everything decor-related needs to be provided by you, but that gives you plenty of freedom to create an event that is everything you’ve ever imagined!
