About The Mountain Lakes House Wedding Venue

57 Mountain Avenue

Princeton, NJ 08540

Located less than two miles from the heart of Princeton, amid the 75-acre Billy Johnson Mountain Lakes Nature Preserve, the Mountain Lakes House in New Jersey feels worlds apart from the hustle and bustle of city life but close enough to be a convenient location to travel to for an event.

A tranquil lake forms the backdrop to the lake house, which was constructed in the late nineteenth century by the damming of Mountain Brook to allow for ice production. Before modern technology provided refrigeration, this ice was necessary for keeping food cold. The property’s surrounding woods once served as open fields and farms.

In 1929, Edgar Palmer, a Princeton graduate who thought of the lakeside oasis as a beautiful spot for relaxation, acquired the land. In 1957, ownership passed to the Clarke family. They commissioned the design of the Cape Cod-style house by Princeton architect Rolf W. Bauhan. You can see Bauhan’s homes in the finest neighborhoods of Princeton.

Details of the Grounds

The Mountain Lakes House in New Jersey was formerly a private home with large public rooms and an expansive covered terrace. The venue features several indoor and outdoor spaces, perfect for large gatherings or small, intimate celebrations.

Outdoor spaces are available from April through November, with a maximum capacity of 150 guests. Outdoor spaces include the front area, the upper terrace, the lower terrace, the lakeside lawn, and the parking lot. The front contains a circular driveway landscaped with native shrubs and perennials.

The upper terrace features glorious lake views, a raised stone terrace covered with a canopy, and clear plastic rain curtains. The lower terrace is an extension of the upper terrace. Furthermore, the lakeside lawn is popular for outdoor ceremonies. The parking lot can hold up to 35 cars.

The interior spaces can host up to 50 people. They feature bright, airy rooms with hardwood floors and neutral paint colors. The foyer is an entrance hall that leads to the main interior spaces. The living room is a large, formal room with wood paneling and lake views through a bay window. Additionally, the dining room is spacious and has a view of the lake.

The downstairs lounge or bride’s room is cathedral-ceilinged with a connecting bathroom. The groom’s room is a comfortable, first-floor room that couples can use as a getting-ready space.
